Even bad days are good days!

I ventured out yesterday into the early Morning mist in search of Pigeons. Being a Sunday, I set up and waited for a reasonable hour to start Shooting, as to not upset the neighbours!

When we arrived on the farm, it seemed eerily quiet. The birds seemed to have dissapeared. It didn’t exactly fill me with confidence.

The hours seemed to fly by, with very little action of any description. We saw a few crows, but 3 or 4 pigeons over the course of almost 3 hours! I’ve never seen anything like it. Don’t get me wrong, the birds aren’t here in massive numbers and I don’t often shoot massive bags, but to go home empty handed is a first for me.

I tried all sorts, the decoy pattern was changed on a few occasion, the hide modified, I even stopped talking to my mate for a bit! But nothing bought the birds in, well except one. Typically as I was pouring a cup of tea from my flask, one bird decoyed perfectly, but I couldn’t get him lined up for a shot in time....

I’m sure I’m not the only one this has happened to, and who knows it may happen again. But you know what? Who cares?! I for one would rather sit out in beautiful countryside rather than in front of the TV at home! As it turned out, the neighbouring farm was putting in some winter drilling’s, hence the lack of avian activity on the farm I was sat in!

There are a few positives though, I’m sure I’ve got a bit of a tan! The weather was amazing for this time of year. I saved myself a few quid on cartridges and my gun didn’t need much of a clean when I got home.

Hey Ho, better luck next time.
